The Bitter Truth A Brief Look at Lying - 688 Words

The Bitter Truth From the moment we learned to speak, our parents taught us that we should be honest. Most people don’t seem to follow this teaching since everyone lies in one way or another. Bella DePaulo, a professor who’s studied the phenomenon of lying, conducted an experiment on one hundred forty-four people. They were instructed to record every lie they told in a journal for a week. Only seven people claimed to have told no lie (â€Å"It’s the Truth†). Honesty is a moral duty, which can only be disobeyed in certain situations. What exactly is a â€Å"lie†? A lie is â€Å"an intentional untruthful declaration to another person† as defined by the eighteenth century German philosopher, Immanuel Kant (qtd. in Bok). This untruthful declaration harms everyone involved in the situation, including the liar. Brad Blanton, a psychotherapist and an author of a book on lying, said in an interview that lying keeps you locked in the jail of your own mind, while delivering the truth is easier, takes less time, and is less stressful (Ballinger). White lies are small lies intended to spare the feelings of the subject. These are justified in some cases. For example, telling your sister that her newborn baby is really cute when the baby actually isnt very cute at all (yourdictionary.com). If you told her the truth, her feelings would have been hurt and your relationship would have been history. Then there are the other kinds of white lies, the unnecessary ones. For example, telling your motherShow MoreRelatedHamlet as a Revenge Tragedy Essay examples1285 Words   |  6 PagesHamlet as a Revenge Tragedy Revenge tragedy was a brief sub genre of tragedy at the end of the sixteenth century, despite some clashes with the teachings of the church. Virtue Ethics The True Stem Of Moral Character - 1445 Words

Jiovanni Rodriguez Philosophy 103 2014 December 2nd Virtue Ethics: The True Stem of Moral Character Moral character is what dictates an individual s decision making and affects their experiences throughout their life. A person s morals can be based off one s upbringing and environmental factors. Virtue ethics is a philosophical view that greatly supports this claim that the choices a person makes and their actions follow those choices, and display their moral character. This is more likely to be true than Kantianism because this type of ethical view is based off Immanuel Kant, a philosophical thinker whose emphasizes that his writings and beliefs influence the choices people make. However, people do what is morally acceptable in†¦show more content†¦Virtue ethics, on the other hand, doesn t focus exclusively on actions, but on the character of the individual. There are a number of different perceptions of virtue ethics and many different ways to interpret the lessons behind it, but one of the first and most efficient teaching s came from Aristotle s. He argued that virtue is learned, it is a skill we acquire over time and most of the time it represents a mean or middle way between two extremes. For example, if there was an accident and a car began to burn on fire with someone trapped in it; a rash person rushes in without a care to save the person, were as a cowardly person does nothing. A sensible person weighs out the options before making any decisions, and perhaps goes in, or perhaps just waits for help to arrive. There are three main focuses when breaking down the difference between these important theories. One is based on duty and a fixed moral law (Kant), one is based on enlightened self interest, or what makes us all happy (utilitarianism), and one sees being good as an art that we learn (virtue ethics). A person will try to perform good deeds knowing they will receive a positive outcome. Same goes with a bad decision, thinking about how the result of ones actions and how it could negatively affect you may cause you think twice about your actions before you do them. Utilization of Camias Essay Example

Utilization of Camias Essay Utilization of Camias in the production of â€Å"Bilimbi Juice† Camias Averrhoa bilimbi  (commonly known as  bilimbi,  cucumber tree, or  tree sorrel) is a fruit-bearing tree of the  genus  Averrhoa,  family  Oxalidaceae. It is a close relative of  carambola  tree. It is very common in Thailand, Malaya and Singapore. The bilimbi is closely allied to the carambola but quite different in appearance, manner of fruiting, flavor and uses. The only strictly English names are cucumber tree and tree sorrel. Bilimbi is the common name in India and has become widely used. The tree is attractive, reaches 35 ft in height. Small, fragrant, yellowish-green or purplish flowers marked with dark-purple, are borne in small, hairy panicles emerging directly from the trunk and oldest, thickest branches and some twigs, as do the clusters of curious fruits resembling small cucumbers that grow on strunk and stems. The bilimbi is generally regarded as too acid for eating raw, but in some places, the green, uncooked fruits are prepared as a relish.Ripe fruits are frequently added to curries in the Far East or used in place of mango to make chutney. The fruit juice is popular for making cooling beverages on the order of lemonade. To reduce acidity, it may be first pricked and soaked in water overnight and boiled with sugar to make a jam or an acid jelly. Half-ripe fruits are salted, set out in the sun, and pickled in brine and can be thus kept for 3 months. A quicker pickle is made by putting the fruits and salt into boiling water. This product can be kept only 4 to 5 days. The flowers are sometimes preserved with sugar. Significance of Camias †¢Ã‚  Hypoglycemic / Hypotriglyceridemic / Anti-Atherogenic / Anti-Lipid Peroxidative:  Effects of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract on blood glucose and lipids in streptozotocin-diabetic rats:  Study showed that AB extract has hypoglycemic, hypotriglyceridemic, anti-lipid peroxidative and anti-atherogenic properties in STZ-diabetic rats. †¢Ã‚  Antioxidant / Antimicrobial Activities: The scavenging of NO by the extract of AC fruits was dependent on concentration and stage of ripening.Extracts showed antimicrobial activity against E coli, Salmonella typhi, staph aureus and bacillus cereus. †¢Ã‚  Phytochemicals / Antimicrobial: Phytochemical screening of fruit extracts yielded flavonoids, saponins and triterpenoids but no alkaloids. The chloroform and methanol fruit extracts were active againsxt Aeromonas hydrophilia, E coli, K pneumonia, S cerrevisiae, S aureus, Strep agalactiae and B subtilis. In conclusion, AB fruits possess potential antibacterial activities that warrants further studies.   Anti-Diabetic: Study showed the aqueous fraction was more potent than the butanol fraction in the amelioration of hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in a high fat diet-fed STZ diabetic rats and suggests the AF as the potential source for isolation of the active principle for oral antidiabetic the rapy. †¢Ã‚  Antibacterial: Study of the aqueous extract of AB leaves and fruits showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity could be associated with the presence of bioactive compounds of the flavonoids type, like luteolin and apigenin. The results suggest further studies to isolate and identify the responsible compounds. †¢Ã‚  Anti-Hyperlipidemic: Study showed the fruit and its water extract, but not the alcohol and hexane extracts, to have remarkable antihypercholesterolemic activity. Results suggest the fruit can be used as a dietary ingredient to treat hyperlipidemia. †¢Ã‚  Hepatoprotective / Antioxidant: Study of a methanolic extract of leaves in carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats showed significant inhibition of biochemical alterations, comparable to the standard drug.   Antifertility: Study in mice showed the kamias fruit as a potential source of antifertility drug. A butanol fraction of the eth anol extract exhibited a higher reduction in fertility rate. The activity may be due to either or both of the steroidal glucosides and potassium oxalate constituents. †¢Ã‚  Antidiabetic Properties: Study evaluated the antidiabetic  activity of ABe in STZ-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats.ABe increased glucose tolerance in OGTT testing and showed potent hypoglycemic, hypotriglyceridemic, and anti-lipid peroxidative and anti-atherogenic activities. Here are the vitamins and nutrients found in a Bilimbi fruit: * * Protein * Fiber * Phosphorous * Iron * Calcium * Carotene * Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) * Niacin * Riboflavin * Thiamine Materials needed: * 20 kl. Of Kamias (Available at home) * 10 kl. Of Celery (For flavouring) * 10 kl. Of Carrots (For flavouring) * Bottle (C2 as a container for the powdered juice)
